Twistable, Turnable Man: A Musical Tribute To The Songs Of Shel Silverstein

Bobby Bare Sr. & Bobby Bare Jr. have produced a tribute album based on a catalog of classic country songs by Shel Silverstein.
The tribute album includes artists such as My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Kris Kristofferson and half of the Pixies. You can listen to some clips and buy the album through Amazon.

As a songwriter, Silverstein penned indelible songs made famous by artists such as Johnny Cash, Dr. Hook, Loretta Lynn, and others. No country singer ever made Shel’s work as large a part of his repertoire, though, as Bobby Bare, who first partnered with Silverstein on the seminal Outlaw Country album, Lullabys, Legends and Lies, entirely penned by Shel. Bare and then-five-year-old son Bobby Bare Jr received a Grammy nod for the country radio hit “Daddy What If” (a win, incidentally, would have made Bare Jr the youngest Grammy holder ever, until they were usurped by those mavens of country music: The Pointer Sisters). The song is revisited on the tribute by the now-grown son with his own four-year-old daughter Isabella, making her the third generation to pay homage to Shel on this heartrending tune. (via)

1983 AM Northwest Portland – Punk Segment

Since the ABC video on “The Day My Kid Went Punk” went down, I found this little jem.
In 1983, AM Northwest Portland with Margie Boule and Jim Bosley (a morning news talk show) had a punk segment with a live studio audience full of them. It’s a great incite to how confused the older people were of the “strange looking kids” that they were slightly frightened of. Quite entertaining. Their guest, Buck Munger, then publisher of Oregon’s music trade magazine “Two Louies” discusses the new Punk music scene in Portland.

Buck Munger, who is still involved with the music scene was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame this past January. Two Louies was considered Portland’s version of Rolling Stone and named after Portland’s greatest hit, “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen. There is a tribute website dedicated to the magazine, including a history of Portland’s punk rock with some photos by people that use to work there. Pretty cool read if you have the chance.

Je deteste Serge Gainsbourg

Je deteste Serge Gainsbourg (I hate Serge Gainsbourg) is a compilation of mashups.
The free album mixes Gainsbourg with the likes of Notorious B.I.G, Sugarhill Gang, Eminem, Ja Rule, The Gossip, Kelis and more. (Although I would skip the first track with Offspring, its a bit annoying for my taste.)

Download the album here.
