Introducing the Noughtie List

Introducing The Noughtie List: the 2000s in Review
I’ll be heading up The Noughtie List, a project with Jason Kottke. It’s basically a list of all the “best ofs” from the 2000s. It’s a work in progress so I would love to get your input on what should go on the list. I’ll also be doing a weekly post highlighting the best of the “best ofs” that are on the list, as well as keep you all updated on any new developments.

A special thanks to Rex Sorgatz for letting us use his idea. Be sure to check out his list of “best of” 2009 lists.

Introducing the Noughtie List

As several of you guessed, the December project I mentioned the other day is a collection of lists and articles that summarize the past ten years, i.e. the decade, i.e. the 2000s, i.e. TEN YEARS, MAN, TEN!! We call it the Noughtie List.

The list is curated by Jenni Leder, an art director and fellow internet enthusiast from Dallas, TX. She would love to hear your Noughtie List suggestions, feedback, comments, etc. via email. Jenni will be posting some of her favorite finds to the front page from time to time as well.

A special thanks to Rex Sorgatz for letting us borrow the idea; his list of 2009 lists is well underway and worth a look for those who are only slightly nostalgic.

Esquire’s Augmented Reality Issue

Esquire’s Augmented Reality Issue
Esquire has done interesting things with magazines in the past. In this issue certain pages of the magazine contains 2D barcodes which the user scans using their webcam to activate the augmented reality. The video below explains more on how it works. (It’s a bit more gimmicky, than useful.)

The Augmented reality sections of the magazine have been developed with digital-services firm The Barbarian Group “We wanted to create something that wasn’t just about showing off the technology but actually adds value to the story,” said Barbarian CEO Benjamin Palmer. The magazine features six different interactive sections: A 3D cover featuring Robert Downey Jr., a weather-changing fashion portfolio, a time-sensitive Funny Joke from a Beautiful Woman (Gillian Jacobs), plus a song, a photo slideshow, and an ad from Lexus.

Recycle small electronics for free through the USPS

Recycle small electronics for free through the USPS
The USPS started this recycling program last year (in select Post Offices), I just found out about it. Customers can get free mail-back envelopes for recycling inkjet cartridges, PDAs, Blackberries, digital cameras, iPods and MP3 players and other small electronics. If your local Post Office doesn’t currently carry the bags, be sure to request them at the counter.

Postage is paid for by Clover Technologies Group:

The company recycles, remanufactures and remarkets inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges and small electronics. If the electronic item or cartridges cannot be refurbished and resold, its component parts are reused to refurbish other items, or the parts are broken down further and the materials are recycled. Clover Technologies Group has a “zero waste to landfill” policy: it does everything it can to avoid contributing any materials to the nation’s landfills.

If your Post Office doesn’t carry the envelopes, you should request them from the counter.
