Etsy’s Handmade Moment commercial contest
Etsy had a contest for 30 second spots promoting Etsy and the handmade movement and called the contest the Handmade Moment. Etsy received over 177 submissions and now they are down to 10 finalist. You can go on their site and vote now for your favorite. Voting ends October 4 and the finalist is determined on October 14.
My favorite is by dankwan called “Handmade Moments Are Everywhere”

Andrew Bird & St Vincent
Wow. What a great combination. Brilliant!
This evening there was one of these moments when the situation escapes to us, where the artists take the wheel, and give more than what we would have dared to ask. We had tried to push St Vincent and Andrew Bird to play a piece together, they had spoken vaguely about a resumption of Dylan. Then Annie arrived and Andrew, which was supposed to leave, remained. He sat down with the other end of the piano, his violin with the hand, and improvised on each composition of Annie. We were not any more organizing a concert within an exceptional framework, we assisted, jellyfishes, with pure creation, a duel enchanter.
A few weeks later, Andrew Bird announced that St Vincent would ensure its first parts the United States. In Paris, some lucky devils knew where they had met…

xkcd: volume 0 is the first xkcd book!
I love this comic, its simple and truly geeky. Roo and I giggle over the boy/girl ones cause it reminds us of our relationship. If you order now, you can get a signed copy of the book. (I’m ordering now) More about the book:
It features selections from the first 600 comics, including various author and fan favorites. It was lovingly assembled from high-resolution original scans of the comics (the mouseover text is discreetly included), and features a lot of doodles, notes, and puzzles in the margins. For the first 24 hours this is up, you can order a signed copy — just select the option from the menu. The book starts shipping Wednesday (though the signed copies won’t ship for another week or so.)
The book is published by BreadPig, a company founded by my friend Alexis, and their portion of the profits will go to build a school in Laos through the charity Room to Read.

Making a Macworld Cover: Start to Finish

After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.
On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO’s. Canon’s sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4×5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens.
